When a patient is missing most or all of their permanent teeth, our dentists may recommend dentures in Port Jefferson Station, New York. These removable dental restorations can allow you to speak, smile, and eat properly again.

What Are Dentures?
Dentures are dental restorations that replace all of your missing teeth. A flesh-colored acrylic base, to which replacement teeth are attached, sits over the gums. Replacement teeth are attached to this base. With the upper denture, the base also covers the roof of your mouth.

What Are Full Dentures?
Full dentures are used when all of the teeth are missing, or after any remaining teeth have been removed. The gums and jaws may need up to several months to heal before dentures can be worn. Conventional full dentures will be custom made specifically for your smile. There is another type of full denture called immediate full dentures. These can be worn immediately after any remaining teeth have been removed, but must be aligned to an ideal fit later. Many people use immediate dentures while waiting for their conventional dentures.

What Are Partial Dentures?
Partial dentures are used when some of the natural teeth remain. These dentures are held in place by a metal framework.

How Do I Care for My Dentures?
When you handle your dentures, make sure you stand over a folded towel or a sink full of water. Dentures can break when dropped. Take care to keep your dentures from drying out. Place them in a denture cleanser or water when not in use. Never use hot water, as these can warp your dentures. Brush your dentures daily to remove plaque and food. In addition, you should brush your tongue, gums, and palate every day before putting in your dentures. Visit N.J. Nicastro Dental PC if you have any problems with your dentures. The fit of your dentures should be checked at least once a year.
