No, we aren’t talking about your hair. We’re talking about your teeth and gums. Gum disease can lead to a number of problems. Not only can gum disease cause loose (and lost) teeth, it can also lead to problems with your jaw, complications with diabetes and other health problems. How do you know if you have gum disease? You may notice that your gums are bright red, tender or that they bleed when you brush or floss. If you have noticed any of those things, you should contact our dentists, Dr. Nicastro and Dr. Felpo.

Gum disease is primarily caused by plaque on your teeth. The plaque causes your gums to swell, allowing more plaque to build up below the gumline. That allows bacteria to enter your gums and your body. If gum disease is caught early enough, our dentist may be able to treat it with a procedure known as scaling and root planing. This is a two-step procedure in which the plaque is removed from the teeth above and below your gums. Then the dentist cleans and smooths the roots of your teeth, allowing them to form a healthy attachment to your jaws.

If you are experiencing the symptoms of gum disease, contact N.J. Nicastro Dental PC in Port Jefferson Station, New York at 631-928-2020 and schedule your appointment today.
