A Porcelain Crown Can Be Used to Improve the Appearance of an Unappealing Tooth

Posted .

If one or more of your teeth suffer from chips, old fillings or other cosmetic imperfections, it can leave you feeling self-conscious about your appearance. One of the more common methods for restoring the appearance of an unappealing tooth is to have your dentist, Dr. Nicholas Nicastro Jr., replace the tooth enamel with a porcelain dental crown.

A dental crown in Port Jefferson Station, New York, is essentially a perfect replica of the enamel layer of the tooth. The crown itself is hollow to allow it to be anchored on a post-like abutment that is formed from the core structures of the tooth. A crown that replaces a tooth in your smile is most often made from porcelain or porcelain fused onto a metal core.

Dr. Nicholas Nicastro Jr. will start by using a drill to remove the entire tooth enamel layer. Then, he will create a detailed impression of the abutment and any corresponding teeth. The impression will be sent to a dental lab where the porcelain crown will be custom made. Then, a hard, plastic, temporary crown will be cemented over the abutment to protect it.

Dr. Nicholas Nicastro Jr. will call you back in for a follow-up appointment when your porcelain crown is ready. The temporary crown will be removed and the new crown will be cemented directly onto the abutment.

If you have one or more unappealing teeth in your smile, you should contact N.J. Nicastro Dental PC at 631-928-2020 to ask about restoring it with a porcelain crown.
